Betül & Murat (aka B&M)

We have met for the first time ever when we were going to the elementary school. We must have been 11-12 years old at the time. Then we lost each other’s paths, and met randomly at a bus stop in Ankara years later, when Betül was waiting the bus from Tunus to Bilkent. We have been together since that day, exploring the world, sometimes alone, but most of the time together…

Betül

I was born in Bursa, Turkey. When I was a kid, my parents loved travelling together with my dad’s best friends. The five of us, we would go to the west and south coast of Turkey for a week every year. Each one of us would have a bag, carrying our own stuff, in the spirit of backpackers. We would travel all the west and south coasts from the sea, with daily cruise trips, and from the road. Therefore, I think the travel bug has bit me at that time. Then I moved to Ankara to study at the university. I have moved to Lund, Sweden to do an Erasmus exchange study for the second year of the university, for 10 months. Jag kan talar svenska, men båra lite =) This also gave me the chance to do a bit of travelling in Europe, other than Sweden, also Italy, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany. At the end of my university studies, I have moved to Stony Brook, NY, USA to do a PhD in physics. Stony Brook is “relatively” close to the New York City, so we know that place quite well. We also traveled as much as possible in the US. I have lived in the US for 6 years, so I am well immersed into the American culture and language. Another advantage of living in the US is that we could meet people from different countries and cultures. One of the most memorable trips of these 6 years was going to India for our friends’ wedding. Finally, at the end of our time in the US, we have decided that we wanted to experience more of the European culture for a while, and we moved to Paris, France, so that I can work as a postdoctoral researcher. Paris has been an amazing experience for the last 2 years and 1 month. Donc, je parle assez français =) While in France, we did a road trip in the Côte d’Azur (above picture is from Saint Tropez) from Arles to the Italian border, and went to Lyon, Champagne region, Grenoble, Villard-de-Lans, Chamonix, Saint Gervais, and finally to Mont Saint Michel.  In addition we took the opportunity to visit family in Denmark and Germany, and friends in Italy and Netherlands. Now my job has ended, and we’re moving back to the US next year. Between the two jobs, we have a few months to travel and we’re hoping to make a dream come true by going to the South America. We hope to keep you updated on this trip and the trips to come, and hopefully some memoirs from previous trips.

As you can see, we love both living in and travelling to different places and exploring. Hope you will enjoy exploring with us…

Murat

My life started in Turkey in a town called Bursa. Bursa is a very convenient city, it is definitely a big city with around 2.5m people but also very easy to get around. I spent most of my school holidays in Anamur, where my family has a small motel called Anamur Dragon Motel. Anamur is a special place for me, it is partly because I have a lot of memories here. But I also believe that Anamur is still a unique place. We are fortunate to have all natural food and an almost private beach for ourselves here, which is hard to come by nowadays. Sadly, I could not do that much travelling around Turkey. I started my studies as a computer engineer in Kocaeli University and finished my undergrad in Hacettepe University, Ankara. During my junior summer, I did a 70 day trip around Europe, including Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. I think that was the time I realized that I loved travelling, especially the backpacking kind of travelling. I kept a diary for every single day of that trip and hoping to digitize them on this blog as well. Then, I continued with my master degree in Bilkent University in Ankara as well. After that I moved to the US for my PhD. However, my PhD did not work and I ended having another masters degree. My wife Betul and I spent around 4 years in the US, mostly in Cleveland and New York, where whenever we had a chance we traveled. This includes our honey moon to Miami and Bahamas, Niagara Falls, New Orleans, Portland, Ski trips to Hunter Mountain, Seattle and an amazing road trip to California. I worked in New York City as a software developer for financial institutions. It is hard to describe the feeling you have when you live in New York City. It is amazing that you will get used to the crowd, noise and the sanitation situation (it is not as bad as people describes). And there is a simple reason for this, NYC has so much to offer that you will compromise eventually. We were fortunate to make the most of the NYC where we experienced great food, entertainment and a lot of good friends. Then, we moved to Paris as my wife got a job from there. Paris was a total delight. Living in Paris was one of the most amazing experiences that I had in my life. My favorite activity in Paris was biking in the city. It is the best way to explore the city. And of course whenever we get the chance we continued to travel in Europe as well. Now my wife wrapped up her work and I had a tenure of almost 5 years with the industry, we thought that it is a good time to have a small break. We will be relaxing for a month in Turkey with our families and friends and we will be on our way to explore the amazing lands of south america. This kind of trips are our childhood dreams and we are really excited that they are coming together finally. We will do our best to share our experience with the rest of the world as we have been learning from others experience a lot. Good to be on the road…
